Inshore coastal zone surveying & mapping with CW-30LiDAR

Recently, the aerial survey & remote sensing station and the marine surveying & mapping team of Guangdong Provincial Institute of Land and Resources Surveying & Mapping used the JOUAV CW-30LiDAR UAV to obtain 3D point cloud in a bay in Taishan City, and measured the inshore part of the coastal zone (generally referred to as the water depth is less than 1m) The water elevation is used to compare the accuracy and efficiency of the data obtained by traditional operation methods, and seek a more optimized model to complete the coastal zone survey task more efficiently.

Coastal zone surveying is related to the monitoring, evaluation and management of the ecological environment and its resources in the coastal waters. The use of new surveying and mapping methods to construct coastal geographic information will provide basic geographic information support for the sustainable operation of the coastal ecological environment system and economic system.

 

The traditional measurement method is inefficient, and the elevation near the land requires the use of a small boat to carry a single-beam echo sounder to measure the topography of the shore, or the staff to carry equipment for field measurement.

Due to the shallow water depth, the boat speed generally does not exceed 2 knots when traveling on the shore, and because of the tortuous coastline, it is more difficult for the boat to navigate. Generally, the measurement range per day is less than 2 square kilometers. In the case of manual field measurement, the invisible silt and tide fluctuations will threaten the safety of personnel.

With the development of technology, Guangdong Provincial Institute of Land and Resources Surveying & Mapping is also constantly trying, for the first time to introduce UAV equipped with LiDAR aerial survey technology into coastline survey tasks.

During the mission, CW-30LiDAR operated two sorties to complete the coastline survey of the region.

"Using CW-30LiDAR can replace most of the work of field personnel and fully guarantee the safety of them. Moreover, about 20 square kilometers of data can be obtained in one sortie, the change of operation mode has increased the efficiency by 10 times, and the production efficiency has been greatly improved." The technician in charge of this task said.
